The story
How this piece came to be.
Silas came out of Mike's ongoing series of beards — hand-drawn characters that each get their own name, back-story and (usually) a slightly ridiculous personality. Every piece is finished and checked by Mike himself before it leaves the studio.
In the studio
The process.
Each work moves through four slow stages — from first study to the final surface.
01 — Sketch
Every piece begins with a rough pencil sketch on the studio floor — hunting for the character's attitude before any colour goes down.
02 — Colour
Bold flat colour is blocked in — pinks, mustard yellows, electric blues. Nothing tasteful is allowed in this stage.
03 — Line
The signature quirky linework is inked back over the top by hand — every whisker, feather and beard hair.
04 — Print
Each print is checked and rolled by Mike in-house before shipping worldwide.
